Joyce has been sewing for over 50 years and is entirely self taught. Sewing has always been her passion and to this day she is as enthusiastic as when she started, learning on her Mother’s hand cranked Singer sewing machine. Now she sews on the latest computerised models but the satisfaction of creating a specialised garment remains the same. She was extremely proud to have been a finalist in The Great British Sewing Bee 2016.
Since the show was televised Joyce has met and talked about her experiences before different audiences, including pupils and their parents at a nearby independent school and keen sewers at the local Heritage Centre. “At these sessions I consider it amongst my greatest achievements to have been able to encourage and nurture the sewing interest with many young girls, as well as a few young boys” said Joyce. She is also looking forward to meeting other sewing enthusiasts and teaching classes at the Great British Sewing Bee Live show.
Being an amateur sewer Joyce’s love of the craft always fitted around her career, which culminated as a Principal Officer in a London borough. She has now been retired for 14 years. She continues to sew throughout her retirement, always looking for new and different projects, constantly honing her skill to complement her talent.
